How do I deal with my stress and anxiety?
November 20th, 2009 | by Michael |Kendra W asked:
I think I have severe stress problems, not just from my Asperger’s. I get upset easily, I swear a lot when I get really angry. I feel overworked with school and homework. Do I might have Tourette’s or ADHD or anything else that could cause this? I need help.
Also I have excessive worrying about the future and I keep remembering the abuse I went through in the past and I can’t shake it off.

First of all; If you’re a gifted student like me, you might have the problem of feeling like you HAVE to get straight A’s all the time. If this is a problem for you, find something you can lose yourself in and when you feel overwhelmed by homework, do a little bit and then do whatever it is you enjoy. For me, this is my computer.
If this is not your issue, then still, find something you can lose yourself in and when you feel stressed do something relaxing that you enjoy (if it’s Counter-Strike, DON’T PLAY GUNGAME ). If you don’t know of anything that’s all that relaxing, then take a walk. Personally, it helps if it’s raining while I walk..
Worrying about the future: Do your best to think about the present. I know a lot of us have our panties in a bunch about the economy, but that’s stupid..

You can learn how to understand your thoughts and feelings about the things that cause you stress and to test your assumptions and beliefs about them, especially where unhelpful or unrealistic. By trying out new ways of reacting you can essentially change your behaviour to something more positive and useful. It’s something you can do yourself, and the approach is also used professionally - it’s called Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). There are many low cost resources which can help you work your way through this, including books and DVDs.
Hope this is helpful - and good luck!

I have Tourette’s, Asperger’s and OCD. If you’ve got Tourette’s, you’re almost certain to have OCD and ADHD as well, they say. But I don’t think there’s clear boundaries between a few of these. Asperger’s and ADHD can both cause attention problems, but whereas ADHD’s attention problems result from mental fatigue due to the hyperactivity, Asperger’s attention problems result from finding all sorts of stimuli interesting and thus you have trouble filtering them out. These are my opinions. As for having Tourette’s, I don’t think you do because when I cuss it’s because that’s what I want to say the least. I can’t get it off my mind and my nerves feel like they’re on fire until it comes out.
As for anxiety, get a book on meditation and practice many different types and practice daily and diligently. Also talk with your doctor about getting on a Selective-Serotonin-Reuptake-Inhibitor (SSRI) medicine to help calm your nerves a bit. The meditation is what will help more than anything.
Here’s a technique to get you started. Close your eyes. Put both hands over your belly. Finger tips touching. As you breath in, visualize your stomach expanding and the fingertips coming apart. Then slowly exhale and visualize them coming together. Do this for at least a half a minute to a minute. This is called “one-pointing” in meditation philosophy. The focus of the mind on only one thing (and your breathing) at one time will calm it. With practice the mind’s ability to focus grows stronger. With enough practice, one can gain the ability to slow their heart rate very quickly and relieve anxiety.
Hope this helps. Glad to see a fellow Aspie out there. Wish there were more of us so there would be more like-minded people to hang out with.

Some people deal with stress nowadays by having a weekend day spa break. In fact, as stated by studies, more than 60 million Americans take a vacation to health spas every year to relieve their stress. It gives a proof that the health spa business turns into one of the most profitable industries in the country.
